VANCE, Ala. — Authorities in Vance, Alabama, are investigating a tragic officer-involved shooting that left 43-year-old Christie Adkins dead and her brother, 36-year-old Ricky Adkins, critically injured and facing manslaughter charges. The incident occurred on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at approximately 5 a.m. in the 13000 block of Gladys Drive, prompting a response from deputies with the local sheriff’s office and the Lakeview Fire District.

The Incident

Sheriff’s deputies were serving a felony warrant when they arrived at a residence and located Ricky Adkins in a tent situated at the rear of the property. According to law enforcement, Christie Adkins attempted to shield her brother as deputies engaged the occupants. Deputies reportedly ordered Ricky to remove a face covering, after which he allegedly raised what appeared to be a handgun over his sister’s shoulder.

Investigators later determined the weapon was a BB or pellet gun designed to closely resemble a functional firearm, making it indistinguishable from a real handgun. Deputies, acting on perceived imminent threat, discharged their department-issued firearms, striking both Ricky and Christie Adkins. Emergency personnel quickly responded, and both were transported to a nearby hospital. Christie Adkins succumbed to her injuries at the scene, while Ricky Adkins was treated for life-threatening wounds. No deputies were injured during the exchange.

Investigation and Charges

The Vance County Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), independent of the sheriff’s office, conducted a full investigation including review of body camera footage, physical evidence collection, and witness interviews. Following consultation with the district attorney, authorities obtained a manslaughter warrant for Ricky Adkins, holding him responsible for the circumstances leading to his sister’s death. Ricky Adkins will face the charge upon release from the hospital.

Officials emphasized that the incident remains under active investigation, with authorities assessing the sequence of events, the involvement of the BB/pellet gun, and any other contributing factors. Law enforcement is coordinating with the community to ensure accurate information is shared while the case proceeds through the legal process.

Community Reaction

The officer-involved shooting has left the Vance community in shock, as residents mourn the sudden death of Christie Adkins and the critical condition of her brother. Family, friends, and neighbors have expressed grief, recalling Christie’s role as a sister, mother, and member of the local community. Community leaders and law enforcement have urged the public to allow the judicial process to unfold without speculation, emphasizing that investigations are ongoing and that evidence will guide legal outcomes.

Support services, including crisis counselors and chaplains, have been made available to both law enforcement personnel and affected family members. Authorities encouraged anyone with relevant information about the incident to cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

Reflection and Ongoing Efforts

This tragic event underscores the complexity and dangers faced by law enforcement officers during warrant service and the rapid decision-making required when threats are perceived. It also highlights the unforeseen consequences when simulated firearms are involved in real-world encounters.

Ricky Adkins’ actions during the incident, while under investigation, are central to the pending manslaughter case, and investigators continue to reconstruct the events to determine accountability, motive, and any contributing factors.

The sheriff’s office has reiterated its condolences to the family of Christie Adkins and emphasized that the loss of life in such circumstances is devastating for all involved. Community outreach and updates will continue as additional information becomes available.

Christie Adkins will be remembered for her life, her relationships, and the impact she had on her loved ones. Ricky Adkins’ legal proceedings will provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding this tragic day.

Rest in peace, Christie Adkins. You were loved. You will be missed. And your memory will live on in the hearts of everyone who knew you. Gone too soon, forever remembered.
